Learning watchmaking in the UK: choose your next step

Use the BHI's official learning routes and a practical checklist to choose instruction suited to your goals.

Start by deciding what you want to learn: changing straps, assembling a kit, understanding a mechanical movement or developing repair skills. These goals need different amounts of instruction and practice.

Goal A useful next step
Explore the hobby Look for an introductory session with supervised practical work
Assemble one kit Confirm the kit's instructions, support and tool requirements
Learn servicing systematically Investigate a structured learning programme with feedback
Work towards professional qualifications Ask the teaching organisation about its current qualification route

The BHI route

The British Horological Institute describes both short practical courses and longer distance learning. Its short courses use the facilities at Upton Hall in Nottinghamshire. Consult the BHI's own getting-started page for the current routes and links, checked 25 October 2026. This is an independent editorial link; we do not receive an affiliate payment for it.

Questions before booking

Ask whether the course is aimed at complete beginners, which tasks you will carry out, whether tools and practice movements are provided and how much individual feedback is available. Check accessibility, travel, cancellation terms and any requirement for prior learning directly with the provider. Do not buy a full bench setup before confirming the course's equipment list.

Build a record of learning

Keep a notebook for each practice project: movement reference, source instructions, photographs, observations and unresolved questions. Separate what you observed from what you inferred. Record a problem before dismantling further so a tutor can follow what happened.

Keep the scope manageable

A first course should help you identify the limits of your current skills as well as teach a procedure. Leave valuable watches and water-resistance work to an appropriately equipped professional. The bench setup guide and tool checklist can help you prepare a calm practice area without buying equipment for tasks you have not learned yet.
